These Yeti coolers, gearboxes recalled due to hazards

U.S. product regulators said Thursday that Yeti has recalled 1.9 million coolers and gearboxes because magnets on them can come loose, posing a risk of serious injury or death.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said consumers should immediately stop using the four recalled products and contact Yeti for refund information.

The closures on the recalled products could fail, resulting in detached magnets, the CPSC said. If swallowed, two or more powerful magnets can attract each other or another metal object and get stuck in the digestive system. The CPSC said if that happens it can cause perforations, twisting and blockage of the intestines, potentially resulting in infection, septicemia and death.

The products being recalled are:

–Yeti Hopper M30 Soft Cooler 1.0 and 2.0, approximately 25 inches wide and 17 inches high.

–Yeti Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Cooler, measures approximately 45cm wide and 45cm high.

–Yeti SideKick Dry Gear Case, which is about 11 inches wide and 7 inches high.

The cool boxes and gear bags were sold at:

–Dick’s Sporting Goods

–Ace hardware

–Academic sport and outdoors

–Yeti and other stores, including Amazon

They were sold from March 2018 to January 2023. The gearbox retails for about $50 and the coolers between $300 and $350.

The company has received 1,399 reports of its magnet-coated closures deteriorating or failing, including reports of missing or detached magnets. No ingestion of magnets or injuries have been reported.
