Funko sends $30 million worth of products to a landfill

Funko, the toy and collectibles manufacturer best known for its Funko Pop Vinyls line, is sending its products worth at least $30 million to a landfill.

As reported by Kotaku, Funko revealed during an earnings call that it has so much unused inventory in warehouses that, financially, the best option is to throw $30 to $36 million in the trash.

“Year-end inventory totaled $246.4 million, up 48% from a year ago,” Funko said. with the operational capacity of our distribution center. This is expected to result in a write-off in the first half of 2023 of approximately $30 to $36 million.”

CEO Brian Mariotti said during a call from investors that one distribution center was so full that Funko rented shipping containers to store the excess inventory.

Funko has certainly kept its foot on the gas when it comes to producing new lines of its Pop Vinyls. In addition to a host of iconic series featuring characters from Marvel, Star Wars, Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, and DC, there are also plenty of more obscure series, including Pets, Conan O’Brien, NBA, Ad Icons, and more.

A dozen figures are also launching this month, including a glow in the dark Shazam, the 1989 Batman, Walt Disney on a train, and more.
